Dandruff may not be as obvious as breakouts but it can affect your self-confidence as well. If you ever had seen flakes in your dark-colored clothes and experienced itchy flakey scalp, then you probably understand that this situation is a pain.
Having dandruff is not contagious nor harmful but it can be uncomfortable. Dermatologist Joshua Zeichner explained that this is usually a result of how our bodies react to yeast, a kind of fungus that is normally found in our skin and scalp.
When there’s excessive growth of yeast, it leads to flaking. This is more common in humid places since the environment creates an ideal place for your body to have more yeast – hence, more dandruff. If you have been suffering from this problem, here are remedies you can try:
Baking Soda
Is there anything baking soda can’t do? Apart from whitening teeth and relieving sunburn, it can apparently help those suffering from dandruff.
Besides having antibacterial components, baking soda is also a great exfoliant, which means that those who have dandruff buildup in their scalps can benefit from this. Add a tablespoon of this to your shampoo (or water) to create a paste.
Put the mix on your scalp and massage before rinsing. Don’t do this too often, dermatologist Kaveri Krhade advised because baking soda can damage your hair due to its high alkalinity.
Apple Cider Vinegar
A lot of health benefits have been linked to apple cider vinegar, which is most commonly ingested. However, in treating dandruff, it should definitely be applied rather than taken orally.
Apple cider vinegar has antifungal and antibacterial properties, which address the overproduction of yeast, and is an astringent, which prevents excessive oil and shrinks pores. First, dilute it in water (1:1) and apply the mixture to your scalp.

Then, let it sit for five minutes before rinsing. It may not be the most aromatic solution but it can definitely help your scalp.
Aloe Vera
Dry, flakey scalp means that it lacks hydration, which aloe vera can definitely address. This wonder plant that also eases sunburn has antibacterial and antifungal properties, perfect for those with dandruff.

Because it works wonders as a moisturizer, it can relieve itchiness as well. Apply the gel or the freshly scraped flesh of aloe vera to your scalp. Let it sit for 30 minutes and rinse – it will also be beneficial for dry, coarse hair.
Coconut Oil
Because coconut oil has antifungal properties, it can reduce yeast growth. Plus, it has anti-inflammatory components, so it can calm your scalp.

What’s more, the small molecules of coconut oil can enter the shafts and nourish your hair. Scoop out two tablespoons and apply it on your scalp and mane. Leave it on for an hour or two then rinse with your shampoo.
