Since the music video of Katy Perry’s ‘California Girls’ dropped, we all thought the singer is all fun and games. However, she is just like any of us who is also vulnerable and in fact, she revealed that she was clinically diagnosed with depression.
‘Smile’ Album
Apparently, the singer learned about her mental health condition while she was working on her latest album ‘Smile,’ admitting that she suffered from depression after her shift in career. The songs were filled with messages about hope, resilience, and happiness, which she wrote during her dark days.

Katy hinted that she primarily spiraled down after her 2017 album ‘Witness’ didn’t meet her expectations – it only stayed on top of the Billboard 200 for a short while and was bumped out of the Top 10 just on its second week. Although she admitted that she had bouts of depression in the past, the most recent fight with the mental health issue was especially dark.
Medications
After being diagnosed with depression, Katy felt ashamed of taking antidepressants because her previous works screamed self-love and positivity. However, taking the right medication greatly helped her after weeks of not being able to get out of bed.
The soon-to-be mom likened the situation to her brain needing crutches and that extra help were the antidepressants that were instrumental in putting her back on her feet. Indeed, there’s no shame in taking medicines and she isn’t certainly alone going through this battle.

In every 10 Americans, about one takes an antidepressant, which is the third most prescription drug, the National Health and Nutrition Survey found out. There are several types of this medicine but all work to alter the neurotransmitters, which are responsible for depression.
Help from Orlando Bloom
Katy has gone to therapy and took antidepressants to help her deal with depression. Apart from these things, she leaned a lot on Orlando Bloom, the father-to-be of her bundle of joy. The ‘Carnival Row’ star had been instrumental for the singer to find the balance.
Orlando, who Katy said was also on a spiritual journey, became somewhat an anchor that held her down, adding that the hunk was the number one fan of Kathy Hudson (her real name) and not her singer persona.

The pair met in 2016 at a Golden Globes after-party and immediately clicked. After a few years of on-and-off relationship, they announced their engagement in February 2019, with Katy showing off her massive and unique ring on social media.
Just this March, they revealed that they were expecting. Their wedding, meanwhile, was postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.
