Harry Belafonte – Unknown Rank: 1944
When you listen to Harry Belafonte’s rendition of the traditional Jamaican song “Banana Boat Song,” you’ll likely be charmed by his distinct voice. The song was off his breakthrough album “Calypso.” He also released around 30 studio albums and developed an imposing list of acting credits. From films like “Carmen Jones,” “Kansas City,” and “White Man’s Burden,” Belafonte’s acting skills made him more famous.
In 2020, the documentary “The Sit-In: Harry Belafonte hosts the Tonight Show” was released. Unknown to most, he served in the U.S. Navy in 1944. Service meant qualification for the G.I. Bill benefits, which Belafonte used to sponsor a drama workshop.
