The “Human Fly” Scales The World Trade Center

The original World Trade Center may be no more but its memory and history are still remembered today. Among the persisting stories about the famed building complex is the time when mountain climber George Willig scaled it. On May 26, 1977, the so-called “Human Fly” amazed onlookers when he climbed 110 stories up the towering structure.

According to Timeline, it took Willig less than four hours to accomplish the feat. He was subsequently arrested upon reaching the top and faced the possibility of paying a $250K fine. In the end, though, he was only made to pay $1.10—a penny for each floor he climbed!
