Virginia-Class Submarine – Cost: $3.4 Billion

The Virginia-class submarine is a nuclear-powered seacraft developed by the United States Navy to replace the Los Angeles-class submarines. Measuring 377 feet in length and displacing 7,300 tons, these submarines are smaller and more cost-effective than the Seawolf-class submarines.

Since 1998, 34 of these submarines have been built, and they are now the mainstay of the Navy’s submarine fleet. Equipped with the latest weapons and intelligence-gathering capabilities, the Virginia class is capable of traveling at speeds of up to 25 knots. Besides the detection and destruction of enemy vessels and submarines, they can also be used for reconnaissance and surveillance of enemy forces.
