Boy Discovers Long-Abandoned Metal Object in a Lake—War Secrets Uncovered

The Germans Step Back

The Soviet Red Army was committed to preventing the construction of a defensive barrier by the Germans, leading to the Estonian offensive. However, their progress was hampered after gaining a few bridgeheads over the Narva River and encountering the Wotan Line established by the Nazi Germans, which resulted in a protracted struggle from February to the end of April.

In July 1944, the Red Army launched another offensive and succeeded in seizing control of Narva, prompting the German troops to withdraw to their pre-planned positions 16 kilometers southwest. In an attempt to prevent it from falling into Soviet hands, the Germans even drove their captured tank into Lake Matasjarv.
