A Bibliophile’s Sacrifice

If you’re ever in the U.K. and visit the St. Deiniol’s Library, formerly known as Gladstone’s Library, you’re the indirect beneficiary of one man’s sacrifice. Former U.K. Prime Minister was known for his love of books. However, this love transcended beyond just reading them; he wanted to provide a chance for those who couldn’t afford them to read too.

In 1894, he founded the St. Deiniol’s Library and the following year donated the equivalent of £4.72 million today and most of his impressive 32,000 book haul. More amazing is that these books were wheeled for three-quarters of a mile by his valet and daughter, Mary.
