Ancient Lights

An English property law known as the ‘Right to Light’ gives owners of old buildings an unusual right. Buildings with windows that have been used to receive sunlight for 20 years or more cannot be obstructed. Placing a new structure, tree, wall, or whatever blocks light from these windows is illegal.

Owners of such homes usually place a sign under their windows that simply read ‘Ancient Lights’ to indicate their window is one such window. An interesting thing to note is that this right can be given up for financial payment, or in the case of the infringement of this right, a court can award compensation.
