An Unlikely Romance

Wars are far from glamourous, and hostilities are the norm. But for Elinor Powell, an African-American nurse with the U.S. Army, not even the risk of a court-martial would decide who she loves. She was stationed in Arizona, where POWs were cared for, and fell in love with Frederick Albert, a German Prisoner of War.
By the time Albert was deported, Powell was pregnant, granting Albert special consideration for a visa to the U.S. They married in New York. Although they faced discrimination in the U.S. and later in Germany, they eventually settled in Connecticut, raising their two sons, living out the end of their lives.
