Spanish Village Awards a Witch Each Year

History is full of injustices against women under various guises. But one of the most well-known in popular culture is the persecution of witches. Because it makes such good material for books, movies, and TV shows, it’s easy to forget that the burning of witches was the reality of many throughout the medieval era.
In the 13th century, the entire village of Trasmoz in Spain was excommunicated for witchcraft. In 1511, Pope Julius II also ordered the village to be cursed. However, neither the curse nor the ex-communication was ever lifted. So every year in June, a citizen is awarded the title of the witch of the year,’ Bruja del año.’
