Only those who invest years of hard work in training their sport win a medal at the Olympic Games. But it is also worthwhile financially. The modern pentathlete Annika Schleu would have received a bonus of 20,000 euros for gold – and it was within reach. But nothing came of it and instead she triggered an animal welfare scandal through her dealings with the horse Saint Boy that had been drawn to her. That could affect sponsorship money in the future – but so far Annika is doing very well with her 90,000 euros. In the long run, however, it will be able to capitalize on its own failure.
