The director Francis Ford Coppola enlisted the services of the legendary Marlon Brando in his classic war movie “Apocalypse Now.” However, he was sad to find out that the “The Godfather” superstar showed up on set with a little bit of extra weight. To conceal Brando’s body from the camera, Coppola used mainly close-up shots to film the character of ‘Colonel Walter E. Kurtz.’
Inadvertently, Coppola’s camera trick ended up working in his favor. Brando’s lines in the movie were mostly improvised. The close-up angle was perfect for capturing the actor’s intensity in now-iconic moments, such as his impactful “the horror” speech.
