In 2007, Premiere magazine named the “Casablanca” line “Here’s lookin’ at you, kid” as the greatest-ever movie line. You’d think that the quote was set up by one of the movie’s three writers, but that’s not how it came to life. In the ’40s, it was common for actors to ad-lib, and that’s precisely what Humphrey Bogart (as ‘Rick Blaine’) did in “Casablanca.”
The quote makes for such a loving, earnest, and top-quality piece of dialogue that it’s unbelievable to think Bogart came up with it on the spot. To this day, it remains one of the most inspired improvised moments in the history of cinema.
