Portraying a disabled, mad scientist in the 1964 classic “Dr. Strangelove,” Peter Sellers (‘Captain Lionel Mandrake’) once got up from his wheelchair by accident. But instead of dropping the scene, he delivered a deranged, improvised rambling that featured a whole lot of Nazi references and the classic line “Mein Führer, I can walk!”
The plot-defying moment was crazy for many reasons: not just because the disabled character suddenly got up, but also because it was filled with Nazi references! Most directors would drop it immediately, but not Stanley Kubrick. The scene made it to the final cut and continues to be one of the movie’s best-known moments.
