“I Didn’t Know You Could Read” – Tom Felton As Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
This improvised line comes straight out of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” and resulted from a brilliant moment of inspiration cooked up by a 15-year-old Tom Felton. When addressing his “bodyguard” ‘Goyle’ (who was actually ‘Harry Potter’ in disguise), Felton’s character ‘Draco Malfoy’ funnily says, “I didn’t know you could read.”
The quote worked wonderfully in the scene, pointing out the obvious fact that ‘Harry’ and ‘Goyle’ are very different. But it wasn’t scripted nor part of J.K. Rowling’s original book. It was all Felton’s doing, showing just how confident he was as a young actor.
