Out of all the great scenes in “The Silence of the Lambs,” few are as impactful as the moment in which a jailed ‘Dr. Hannibal Lecter’ (Anthony Hopkins) produces an animal-like hiss sound out of nowhere. Lecter’s hissing seems like it was scripted, as it helps to bring to life the psychopathic nature of a man whose behavior could otherwise be described as calm and rational.
But guess what? While Lecter’s hissing fitted seamlessly with the personality of a highly-intelligent psychopathic serial killer, it was a moment of improvised genius produced by Hopkins. Quite appropriately, he was given the Academy Award for Best Actor for the role.
