Humans are creatures of habit, they say. Our actions are often triggered by what we see and what our common reaction is. That is the guy from this story. He is sitting in his own office, but he knocks before opening the door when he gets up to leave. At least he wasn’t like Sheldon Cooper from “Big Bang Theory.”
That character famously knocked thrice and said the person’s name and repeated two more times before someone could open it. Maybe it even brought this guy some luck, as some superstitions believe knocking on wood does this.
