Several U.S. government representatives spoke about Nelson Mandela’s leadership in the fight for human rights and democracy when he passed away. He assisted in transitioning South Africa from apartheid restrictions to a multiracial democracy. However, this was five years after his removal from the country’s terrorist watch list.
Mandela was a target because he oversaw the African National Congress’ (ANC’s) military wing, which the U.S. Defense Department listed as one of the most notorious terrorist organizations in the world in 1989. That official classification by the U.S. lasted until 2008. That’s when the country finally took the organization and its members off the list.
