Erykah Badu – Malaysia
American singer Erykah Badu was prohibited from performing in Malaysia because of her provocative and genre-blending style, which is evident in her music and visuals. When the Malaysians saw a promotional photo of the singer with the word “Allah,” the Muslim name for God, painted across her shoulders, they were horrified.
Islam is a sacred way of life for Muslims, and Malaysia is a country with a strong religious tradition. The government denied Badu admission to the region because they perceived the image as outright disrespecting the country’s religious beliefs. She argued that she didn’t mean to offend, but it was too late for Badu by then.
