The taxi lurched to a jarring halt, brakes screaming in protest. The world outside was a blur of flashing red and blue lights—the ambulance arrived with a wail. Isabella flung open the door, barely registering the driver’s concerned shout. Her gaze, laser-focused on the house, landed on the driveway in a single, sickening sweep.

Lying there, a crumpled figure was amidst the now-drying suds, a horrifying stain blooming around his head. A scream, raw and primal, ripped from Isabella’s throat. Ignoring the throbbing in her head, a result of the frantic car ride, she launched herself towards John. Kneeling beside him, her trembling fingers fumbled for a pulse.
