The peak of Joy Division’s musical career was also marked by personal and relationship problems with one of its members, vocalist Ian Curtis. As such, Curtis wrote the lyrics of what became the group’s highest-charting hit, “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” inspired by his failing marriage at that time.
Shortly after his passing, the song was released as a non-album single, achieved certified platinum in the United Kingdom, and was recognized by NME as the greatest single of all time. Joy Division’s influence extends today, being one of the pioneers of the post-punk movement with their sparse sound and style.
