The 45 Greatest Songs of All Time That Sparked A Cultural Reset
Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag, James Brown, 1965, Funk
In a career spanning 50 years, James Brown established funk music, became a major figure in 20th-century music, and has earned the titles “the Hardest Working Man in Show Business,” “Godfather of Soul,” and “Mr. Dynamite.” When he was locked in a contract struggle with King Records in 1965, he dropped “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag,” which he always thought would be a big hit.
Sure enough, the song became Brown’s first top ten hits to reach the Billboard charts and was a number one R&B hit for eight weeks. It also gave him his first Grammy Award, specifically the Best Rhythm & Blues Recording.
