The 45 Greatest Songs of All Time That Sparked A Cultural Reset
Redemption Song, Bob Marley and the Wailers, 1980, Folk
Bob Marley established a career known for fusing elements of reggae, ska, and rocksteady combined with his distinctive songwriting style and vocals. In this twelfth album, “Uprising” came one of his greatest works, the “Redemption Song.”
The song served as a freedom hymn and an antidote to slavery, drawing inspiration from the speech of Marcus Garvey. It delivers the message of freeing oneself from mental slavery because none but oneself can free their minds. Unlike most of his songs, “Redemption Song” is a solo acoustic recording without any accompaniment. Many musical icons also released their cover of the song, including Stevie Wonder and Joe Strummer.
