The Canadian Drone-Spying Incident of Paris 2024
Soon after the Paris 2024 Olympics kicked off in July, Canada’s female football team faced chaos when head coach Bev Priestman was suspended by Soccer Canada just before the opening ceremony. The trouble started when two staff members allegedly flew a drone over a training session of their New Zealand opponents.
New Zealand filed a complaint, and French authorities detained a non-accredited member of the Canadian support team in Saint-Etienne. Though Bev denied knowing about the incident, she later accepted responsibility for her team’s actions. Assistant coach Andy Spence took over, while David Shoemaker, CEO of the Canadian Olympic Committee, insisted Canada should remain in Paris despite calls for disqualification.
