Nelson Mandela – 1994, Pretoria, South Africa – The “Free at Last” Speech
It’s no secret that Nelson Mandela had immense respect for his fellow political figure Martin Luther King Jr. In fact, he even paid homage to King’s famous “Free at last!” quote several times. He notably did so in a speech delivered at a luxury hotel in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1994.
Mandela addressed the nation just days before he was officially sworn into office as the first Black president of South Africa. In a short declaration, the Nobel Peace Prize awardee celebrated the end of apartheid and thanked the people who toiled with him for an equal world.
