Malcolm X – 1963, Detroit, Michigan – The “Message to the Grass Roots” Speech
An African American human rights activist, Malcolm X shared a lot of similarities with Martin Luther King Jr. However, he differed from his fellow popular figure in that he criticized the mainstream civil rights movement of the ’60s. His philosophy on the subject of revolution is highlighted in a speech given at a leadership conference in Detroit, Michigan.
In it, Malcolm X differentiated the kind of revolutions waged in the United States and the African continent, emphasizing that the latter involved bloodshed. He also criticized the March on Washington, describing it as a “circus.” The speech marked his impending departure from the Nation of Islam.
