Huey P. Long – 1934, Radio Broadcast, United States – The “Share Our Wealth” Speech
A couple of years after the United States stock market collapsed in 1929, Senator Huey P. Long from Louisiana advocated for Americans to be entitled to a decent standard of living. His crusade, which was made known through a speech delivered via radio broadcast in 1934, resulted in the launching of the “Share Our Wealth” movement.
Long’s speech is still noted for the motto “Every man a king.” and is believed to have influenced President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal programs. Among those is enacting the Social Security Act and raising federal income tax for the wealthy.
