Hillary Rodham Clinton – 1995, Beijing, China – Speech Given at the Fourth UN World Conference on Women
Before she launched her own presidential campaign, Hillary Rodham Clinton made waves as the wife and first lady of former President Bill Clinton in the ’90s. In that capacity, she gave a speech at the Fourth United Nations World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, that still resonates today.
In it, she uttered the famous quote, “Women’s rights are human rights,” an idea that wasn’t new at the time but still helped boost the modern-day feminist movement. Hillary’s words condemning crimes against the feminine gender were heard firsthand by an audience of women, who applauded and cheered her throughout the 20 minutes she spent on the podium.
