Chief Joseph – 1877, Bear Paw Mountains, Montana – Speech Surrendering to General Howard
Chief Joseph was a Native American chief noted for both his bravery and heart. Aside from his leadership of the Nez Perce during the 19th century, he is perhaps best remembered for his surrender to General Oliver Howard in 1877 after months of being pursued.
He famously lamented the deaths caused by the fighting between his people and the United States armed forces before stating he “will fight no more forever.” Those impactful words uttered at the Bear Paw Mountains of Montana have since been coined and referenced in several books and films about Chief Joseph’s life.
