Eva Perón – 1951, Argentina – Renunciation Speech for the Vice Presidency

Eva Perón came to prominence in the ’40s as the charismatic first lady of Argentina. Growing up in poverty, she understood her people’s plight and became well-loved for her charity work. Perón, also called Evita, became so popular that she considered running for the vice president post in 1951.

But with many obstacles barring her campaign, Evita ultimately decided to bow out of the race announcing her decision in a renunciation speech delivered to a crowd of two million. Her supporters notably chanted words of encouragement for Perón, a scene that was immortalized in the popular musical “Evita.”
