Seppala’s joy at his dog’s brilliance was not to last, however, as the rope he had attached to Togo snapped. The team lay drifting on the ice, disengaged from their only hope of survival. But then came the moment of truth.
Without being told to, Togo lunged into the freezing depths of the water and rushed out with the rope in his mouth. He then spun around, wrapping the rope around his shoulders like a harness, before dragging the ice floe and his team to shore. That act of bravery marked one of the greatest accomplishments of any dog. It also strongly reaffirmed Seppala’s faith in his trusted companion.
