Nome’s Only Hope: The Great Race Of Mercy

On January 27, 1925, the serum run, or the Great Race of Mercy as it is popularly called, began. The plan was to move 300,000 units of serum over 674 miles between Nenana and Nome. The epidemic was not yet catastrophic, as the town had imposed a quarantine.
But in time, the quarantine could prove ineffective and could land their residents as well as the surrounding Seward Peninsula population of about 10,000 people in grave danger. 300,000 units of the serum would not avert the epidemic, but it would save them a great deal of time before they received a major batch. They had to act fast.
