Lee Daniels—1959, Producer and Director, Cisgender

Lee Daniels is the first African-American film producer to produce an Oscar-winning film solely. Though “Monster’s ball” received much critical acclaim, he’s added more producer credits to his name since then. But long before his directorial debut, Daniels was a young man trying to come to terms with his personal orientation in an oppressive environment.

In an interview with “US Magazine,” he revealed that some of the homophobic struggles Jamal faced in the Fox hit series, “Empire,” were based on his childhood. Despite the adversities he faced even in the wake of the ’80s AIDS crisis, Daniels remains a fervent supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. The 2021 released film “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” is another one of the films Daniels has directed.
