These 45 Photos Will Make You Rethink The World We Live In

An Invitation From the Sea

Visitors to Disneyland between 1959 and 1967 were in for an unforgettable experience. The attraction of the park was that real mermaids were believed to be living in the Submarine Voyage ride. People were encouraged to take pictures with them, though almost everyone knew they were paid actors.

Susan Hoose, one of the former mermaids, shared that they were paid around $45 per week and had choreographed swimming routines that they performed with the other mermaids. The mermaids had artificial tails that they were given, and they were required to wear them while they swam. This moment was a unique Disneyland experience that can only be remembered fondly today.
