Only a few Hollywood actors can claim that they were legendary in their craft. To say that Sidney Poitier is a great actor is such an understatement; he is more than that. Being the first black male to win the Academy Award for Best Actor instantly cemented Sidney’s unrivaled influence.
The Bahamian actor’s rise to stardom is pretty swift. After joining the North American Negro Theatre, he landed his first significant role in ‘Blackboard Jungle’ followed by the Oscar-winning movie ‘The Defiant Ones.’ In 1999, the icon ranked 22nd on the ‘100 Years…100 Stars’ list among male actors by the American Film Institute. Sidney also received a standing ovation for his Hollywood contribution at the 86th Academy Award.
