These Rare Photos Reveal the Secrets of Titanic’s Tragic Voyage

How a Chef Stayed Warm

Charles Joughin, a chef on board the Titanic, defied the odds by surviving for two hours in the freezing North Atlantic waters. Most people succumb to hypothermia within 15 minutes, but Joughin’s secret was the copious amount of whiskey he consumed. He grabbed two bottles before the ship went down, and his alcohol consumption may have helped keep him warm.

Interestingly, alcohol has been used for centuries to stave off hypothermia, explaining why Arctic explorers of the past carried lots of whiskey on expeditions to protect themselves from the harsh cold. So Joughin’s incredible story highlights the protective properties of alcohol in extreme cold.
