The Statue of Liberty’s Head and the Explosive Incident of 1916
This captivating photograph captures a unique birds-eye view of the Statue of Liberty, taken from the balcony atop the torch in the 1930s. However, what makes this image even more intriguing is the untold story behind it. Just before the devastating explosion that occurred on Black Tom Island, this snapshot was taken.
On July 30, 1916, a planned attack orchestrated by the German Empire changed the course of history. The explosion claimed the lives of seven people, causing extensive damage to nearby homes and even hitting the iconic monument with shrapnel. Consequently, the torch area suffered such severe damage that it remains closed to visitors to this day.
