The Cane Toad, Not Your Average Amphibian
Leaping into our list at a whopping ten inches, the Cane toad holds the title of one of the world’s largest toads. With a history steeped in war and intrigue, these South and Central American natives were utilized by Colombian tribes like the Choco Indians, who coated their weapons with the toad’s venom—a lethal hallucinogen.
Later, in a twist of fate, the Cane toad was transported from Hawaii to Australia in 1935 as an ecological ally against crop-destroying beetles. But the toad took its role a bit too seriously, spreading rampantly from Cairns, Queensland all the way to Western Australia’s Kimberley region, proving that even giants can be unpredictable!
