They Pick Their Spouses

Many people may believe that the Amish had arranged marriages due to their strict adherence to laws and way of life. That couldn’t be further from the truth, as typically, Amish youth of marriageable age are free to choose their life partners. Although courtship begins at the age of 16, most couples get married when they are 20 or older.
Unmarried Amish are free to pick their own husbands or wives and are permitted to spend private time together but never behind closed doors. However, they are only allowed to get married to other Amish people; they are not allowed to marry anybody from outside the community.
