Hiring: Proofreader
Newsrooms operate on strict deadlines, and journalists are under immense pressure to publish their work quickly, with little to no opportunity for amendments. This pressure can lead to errors in reporting, such as the one seen in the East Oregonian in 2015.
The article in question detailed the performance of former MLB pitcher Pat Venditte, and the writer made a mistake in their choice of words. Instead of correctly labeling Venditte as an “ambidextrous” pitcher, the journalist instead used the word “amphibious.” While Venditte certainly possessed the ability to perform in any environment, this was not what the author meant to convey. This proves that good proofreading is essential in anything.
