The Usefulness of the Lifeboats Was Unanticipated
It’s quite surprising that the ship’s crew initially believed they would have no recourse to utilize the lifeboats. This assumption is particularly strange considering that the Titanic had 14 lifeboats, each with the capacity to hold up to 65 people. In addition, there were also four collapsible lifeboats that could accommodate 47 passengers and emergency boats called “Cutters” that could carry an additional 35 to 40 people.
As such, the total lifeboat capacity of the Titanic was 1,176. However, this was not enough to save all the passengers and crew on board. Thankfully, the tragedy resulted in significant changes in maritime safety regulations.
