Test Driving the Vessel
During its first sea trial, the RMS Titanic, weighing 115.3 million pounds, was guided by five tugboats as pilots carefully navigated it from Belfast Lough to the Irish Sea. The purpose of the trial was to test the ship’s seaworthiness and scrutinize its ability to maneuver and stop for safety reasons.
The Titanic exceeded expectations, and many believed the ship to be unsinkable with its state-of-the-art safety features. Following the successful trial, the ship was scheduled to embark on its maiden transatlantic journey on April 10, 1912, to the eager anticipation of many. No one anticipated the tragedy that would make the Titanic infamous for centuries to come.
