Steve McQueen – Private First Class: 1947
Steve McQueen served in the U.S. Marines from 1947 to 1950. In a classic rebel turned hero story, McQueen started with some disciplinary issues. Seven demotions later and time in the military prison got him reformed, famously saving the lives of other Marines. He eventually got the honor of guarding U.S. President Harry Truman’s yacht.
After an honorable discharge, he used the funds from his G.I. Bill benefit to study acting. His 1966 war movie “The Sand Pebbles” was a hit, and he featured in a long list of films and TV shows. In 2020, the Mustang he drove in the movie “Bullitt” sold for $3.7 million.
