A Soldier Shields An Injured Boy In Wait Of Help

As one of Life magazine’s foremost photographers, Peter Stackpole shot a long list of historical events. When World War II erupted, he took his trusty camera with him to capture rarely seen moments like this: a soldier shielding an injured boy from harm as they waited for help to arrive.

According to Life, this touching image was taken in 1944 on the island of Saipan in the Mariana Islands. At the time, it was under the rule of Japan, which began controlling it after World War I. American forces later captured the island in the Battle of Saipan.
