Mister Rogers And Officer Clemmons Take A Barrier-Breaking Dip

Here’s one more reason to love the late Fred Rogers, better known as Mister Rogers. At a time when African-Americans were still prevented from sharing the water with their White counterparts, he invited Officer Clemmons to partake in a symbolic act during a May 1969 episode of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.”

In a grand gesture showing equality, the duo took off their shoes and dipped their feet together in a small plastic wading pool. This came years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 officially put an end to sanctioned segregation in the United States.
