An East German Soldier’s Act Of Defiance

In 1961, the Berlin Wall was erected to physically divide the German city into the East and West factions during the Cold War. Thus, crossing the concrete barrier came with a lot of danger as German Democratic Republic officials tried to prevent defectors from leaving.

Knowing that this East German soldier displayed an admirable act of defiance when he helped a boy caught in the chaos cross over into East Berlin despite orders not to let anyone pass. He was caught by a superior, according to the website Rare Historical Photos, but was likely only given a minor punishment.
