Before the dawn of app-based delivery and ride-hailing apps, the people of Turkey had already devised a simple yet ingenious way to move goods and even people: baskets. Take this hilarious photo, for example. After a night of merriment and drinking, this man was brought home safely by a “küfeci,” a port worker who moonlighted as a basket man.
Another great use of baskets is delivering groceries to the elderly, who are not able to leave their homes. These containers, filled with goods and other necessities, are typically tied with rope and then lifted up and down from a person’s window.
