Crowds Of New Yorkers Celebrate VE Day In Times Square
It’s not at all rare to see New York City’s Times Square crowded. However, it was particularly packed one important day in 1945. After hearing the news of Nazi Germany’s surrender, New Yorkers flocked to the plaza to celebrate Victory In Europe Day (VE Day)—complete with a 15-ton replica of the Statue of Liberty, of course!
While spared by the destruction that Europe endured, New York City felt the effects of World War II, too. According to the New York Post, the Big Apple sent 850,000 of its people to serve and had to make do with limited resources due to food rationing.
