Mobsters Hiding Behind Their Hats At Al Capone’s Trial

There’s a reason why “The Godfather” films and “The Sopranos” made for compelling entertainment. They were based on real crime groups like the mafia that operated in the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries. Take this image taken at the trial of mob boss Al Capone, for one.

Perhaps not wanting their face to be published in newspapers, these men, who Getty Images identified as mobsters, opted to hide behind their hats. Capone was nabbed and imprisoned in the ’30s for not paying his taxes, but the mafia’s decline would only come in the ’70s with the passing of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO Act).
