A Klan Member Seeks Shelter Behind The Police

Although past their peak years, members of the Ku Klux Klan continued to hold rallies into the ’80s. But with the public’s changing views and the nature of the group’s beliefs, their gatherings were often met with backlash. Here’s one held in Austin, Texas, in 1983 that appears to have gone awry.

The interesting thing about this photo, though, is that this hooded Klan member took shelter behind a police officer, who appears to be of African-American descent. The group notably targeted Black people as well as other minorities, making this act a significant show of kindness and duty on the part of the police officer.
